If you remember the chain Toys “R” Us from your childhood (or your children’s childhood), you may wonder what actually happened to it.

There have been lots of headlines over the years about the company, which disappeared in the UK in 2018, before re-emerging as a concession within TG Jones (formerly WHSmith).

Are There Still Toys “R” Us Stores in the UK?

No, all Toys “R” Us standalone stores closed in the United Kingdom in 2018, after the Washington, D.C.-founded chain declared bankruptcy in the US in September 2017.

Although there are no dedicated stores left in the UK, the chain continues to operate in many Asian countries, as well as maintaining European operations in Spain and Portugal.

What Happened to Toys “R” Us in WHSmith Stores?

Newsagent chain WHSmith announced in 2024 that it would open Toys “R” Us branded concessions within some of its UK stores.

76 WHSmith stores were announced over the course of the year as locations for Toys “R” Us concessions.

TG Jones Rebrand

WHSmith’s high street stores were then rebranded as TG Jones from 2025 onwards, after being bought out by private equity firm Modella Capital. Incidentally, the firm also owns Hobbycraft, and so also hosts Hobbycraft concessions within some of its stores.

However, it was then announced in July 2026 that TG Jones would close up to 150 stores, putting the future of the chain (as well as Toys “R” Us) in some doubt.

The brand name WHSmith continues to live on in airports; only the high street shops were sold. These airport stores don’t appear to include the Toys “R” Us brand at this time.

Can You Buy From Toys “R” Us Online in the UK?
