If you’re moving from New Zealand to Australia, you might be looking for an equivalent to Trade Me.
Unfortunately, there is no one-to-one Australian equivalent of Trade Me. Instead, Australians tend to use a combination of marketplaces to sell their second-hand items, depending on what they want to sell. eBay Australia, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree are popular, and Vinted has recently also expanded into Australia.
Trade Me combines a wide range of second-hand selling categories, from property to cars, which makes it difficult to find a direct alternative.
Is Trade Me Available in Australia?
Before we dive into the list, we do need to clarify one point. Trade Me does allow Australian residents to register an account, so you may still be able to use it after you move.
However, in the longer term, it’s probably better to find an alternative that is more suited to Australian residents, as many New Zealanders may be unwilling to ship parcels to you in Australia.
It’s also worth noting that sellers can only cash out to New Zealand bank accounts, so selling on Trade Me won’t work if you have closed your NZ account as part of a permanent move.
Is eBay Australia Like Trade Me?
For buying and selling products online, eBay Australia is a close alternative.
Like Trade Me, it allows you to buy and sell items over many different categories. The Australian market includes things like clothes, collectables, toys, books, and car parts.
eBay has both fixed-priced listings (‘Buy It Now’), and auction-style selling, so it’s quite familiar to Trade Me users.
What About Gumtree?
Gumtree is another major Australian alternative, and is particularly good for local buying and selling of items.
Gumtree is a marketplace that was originally established in the UK and designed for Australians, New Zealanders, and South Africans living in Britain to buy and sell to each other. It’s Australian website has become very popular over the years.
As the platform is a classified ad site, it covers listings such as furniture, property, cars, jobs, and many other categories. It’s therefore probably the closest alternative to Trade Me on this list.
Is Facebook Marketplace an Alternative to Trade Me?
Facebook Marketplace is widely used in Australia for second hand buying and selling.
It’s great for local transactions, as you can find items in your area.
If you previously used Trade Me to clear out unwanted household items, such as furniture, Facebook Marketplace can be a great place to look.
What About Vinted Australia?
Vinted is a new option you can use for items like clothes, craft supplies, and electronics.
The Lithuania-based platform opened in Australia on 1st July 2026, and focuses heavily on second-hand clothing.
If you want to buy and sell second-hand clothes, Vinted could be a great option, but it won’t replace a lot of the categories that are on Trade Me.
